Whether you’re the parent of a child who is new to visiting the dentist or an adult who has had bad experiences in the past, dental anxiety can be a heavy weight on your shoulders and keep you from getting the treatment that you need. That’s why Dr. Scott Kapers, your sedation dentist in Valparaiso, has completed advanced training in sedation dentistry techniques such as IV sedation. When patients visit Creating Smiles, our team strives to provide a comfortable and relaxed environment by being compassionate and caring. Depending on the procedure that you’re getting, we may recommend IV sedation to help calm your nerves and make your appointment completely hassle-free.

Why Choose Creating Smiles, PC For IV Sedation?

What is IV Sedation?

Depending on your level of anxiety or whether you’re having a more extensive treatment, we may suggest IV sedation to help calm your nerves and make sitting through the procedure easier. This form of sedation doesn’t fully put you to sleep, but it does make you less aware of what’s going on during your treatment.

Unlike nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, IV sedation is administered intravenously through a vein. After your treatment is over, we will remove your IV and you will wake up with little to no memory of your visit. You’ll need to have a trusted friend or family member pick you up from our office. The sedative we use works quickly, and your dentist in Valparaiso can easily adjust the dose. Plus, since Dr. Kapers has completed advanced training in this field of dentistry, you can rest assured knowing that you’ll be in good hands.

Who is a Good Candidate For IV Sedation?

People who can benefit the most from IV sedation are ones who are in generally good health but have an intense fear or anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. Our staff will do everything we can to make sure you have a comfortable and positive experience, allowing you to get the healthy smile that you deserve without sacrificing your mental wellbeing. Here are some reasons we suggest this form of sedation to patients:

How Can You Prepare For IV Sedation?

Before your appointment, we will provide you with some instructions on how you can prepare for your treatment and the IV sedation process. The American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists recommends not eating or drinking anything in the eight hours before your treatment. Although IV sedation won’t fully put you to sleep, you may feel groggy or sleepy after the effects begin to wear off. This typically takes place over the course of several hours, which is why we don’t recommend going back to work or school the same day. It’s also in your best interest to avoid strenuous activity, taking certain medications, and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours following your sedation.

If you have any questions about how you can have a relaxed and positive experience at the dentist’s office, don’t hesitate to contact our practice. Your sedation dentist in Valparaiso will be more than happy to speak with you about each of your sedation options to determine which one would be best for your treatment.
